What is AVGIS?
AVGIS is a regional municipal /
quasi-municipal initiative to leverage existing
joint IT infrastructure (i.e. wide area networks), data servers, local GIS
staffing, expertise, knowledge base, and other resources to maximize efficiencies, and provide top
quality GIS technology services to our users. This action is a GIS oriented
expansion of cooperative effort having already been exercised in the past in
this region. Within the past years the cities
of Auburn and Lewiston, as well as Auburn Water and Sewer District (AWSD) and
the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments (AVCOG) have done much in
the way of joint contracting for services such as regional aerial mapping, and
group purchasing of equipment.
Within this
community, there are many shared aspects, infrastructure such as water supply,
water treatment, watershed management, stormwater
management, and a common (Auburn/Lewiston) E911 call center. Others such as
parcel/land mapping also benefit from collaboration of common data
protocols. These are just a few
operations which benefit from a centralized GIS databases to maximize
efficiency keep the data current and useful in these important functions.
Currently a
memorandum of understanding exists between the four charter organizations, the
City of
All municipalities in Androscoggin, Oxford
and Franklin Counties serviced by the Androscoggin Valley Council of
Governments as well as quasi-municipal entities (for example Auburn Water and
Sewer District) in that same area are welcome to join the AVGIS group.
